March Madness MBA Q&A

Emory MBA students join this week's podcast to ask Professor Mike Lewis questions regarding the intersection of March Madness and analytics.

Also streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Stitcher.

There were a few questions that went unanswered due to time constraints, and I want to provide answers as well as resources that provide answers for those.

During COVID is there a fan base that has faded or one that has grown with the cut back of games?

  • Statistically, viewership is down across all sports. So its a safe bet that most fan bases have faded to a degree. In traditional sports, I'm not aware of any team that has actually seen greater fan growth amidst the pandemic than it did prior to last March.

How does the audience affect performance (i.e. Shooting performance in the bubble)?

What are your thoughts on the rising number of threes taken each year in college/NBA (steph curry effect)?

As we mentioned on the podcast last week, Yahoo Sports senior writer Jay Busbee will join us this Thursday, March 11th at 1 PM ET to discuss the art of storytelling as well as sports in the COVID age. Spots are free but limited.

When I started looking into the March Madness MBA program, I noticed that sportsnet often discusses both its features and questions that concern applicants. I liked that the answers to such questions are given by experts, and not just superficial advice. For example, they talk about the admissions process, the pros and cons of different universities. This helps not only to understand whether it is worth participating, but also how to properly prepare for the program.
